ROUGH DRAFT ROUGH DRAFT ROUGH DRAFT ROUGH DRAFT

February 19, 2008

I tell the following story with the knowledge that many readers will not understand or believe or will not want to understand or believe it's veracity. Nonetheless I tell it because it is not my responsibility to convince anybody of its truthfulness but only to retell it for what it is worth. Ephesians chapter 2 tells us:

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Herein I walk. And I don't walk lightly in my responsibility to tell this story. In the past few days, as I began understanding this task I also began to understand why problems have started to surface, not only in my life but in the lives of those around me. Seemingly unconnected events are now beginning to take on a whole new form.

Eph 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know…

It is not for my edification, although it will certainly edify me, and it may not be for your edification although it will certainly edify you. If you can let it, that is to say if you can open your mind to things you have a difficult time believing, you will be amazed at the story which follows. To this end the story begins.

RULERS OF THE DARKNESS OF THIS WORLD

It is Monday morning, the 11th of February, 2008 and it is very early. Teresita and I are meeting Hector and his family at 3:30 a.m. to make the drive into Guatemala City. Teresita and I are catching a plane to the United States and Hector's brother Eddie, a relatively young man who has some issue with his blood, must go to the city each day for five days for a transfusion. If all goes well, he will have an unspecified operation to secure his health. For Hector and his family it has been a very difficult several months back and forth to the doctor trying to find out why he is so sick. Little did I know at this point the real difficulty had begun for this family the day before on Sunday.

SUNDAY

Sunday morning began like any other until someone noticed that Raquel, Hector's 17-year-old sister was not in her bed. She had been seen leaving her room in the middle of the night, wearing her sleeping clothes. No one knew it at the time but she never returned.

Upon making this discovery the family began making calls to try to ascertain her whereabouts. Calls to her cell phone were not answered and friends and others had no idea where she had been or where she was. Hector's mother was upset and crying and there was much angst in the house. Three hours into this situation as it was contemplated to call the police, Hosea, Raquel's older brother tried one last time to call her on her cell phone. Much to his amazement she answered.

The family quickly gathered around Hosea as he asked her where she was. Her speaking was not clear and he was confused when she wouldn't answer him directly. Hector took the phone and told her to tell him where she was, it wasn't important why she was there only that he would come and get her directly. Again she refused but stated that she would borrow some money and take a taxi home. She appeared to be drunk to Hector but there was nothing more that could be done except wait for her to arrive.

A short time later, about nine in the morning she arrived home but she wouldn't enter the house. Hector was extremely angry and told her he wanted to hit her for doing this not only to herself but to her distraught mother. He talked about girls and bars and prostitutes and his anger built. His brother Hosea stepped in, preventing any further altercation.

Hector is a good-sized man, a triathlete 10 years ago. Hosea has more of a bodybuilding physique and is certainly stronger than Hector or most men his age. As he stepped in to prevent Hector from acting out on his frustrations, they both noticed the voice coming from their sister Raquel. It was masculine and certainly not Raquel's, and the things that were being said were vile, foul things. Raquel stood up to leave, her face strangely disfigured as her brothers restrained her.

Immediately they both knew something was up as she was stronger than the both of 1together and it was all they could do to hold her down. Her mother immediately went to call the church for help as the brothers struggled to force her on the bed. During this time Raquel had incredible strength and all Hector could think about was to pray out loud and ask for God's help. This immediately invoked further rantings from what I will call from here forward the evil spirit possessing her.

After a short time the pastor, along with his son-in-law Pedro, one of our trusted San Juan 10:10 workers arrived on scene. What they found was truly hard to believe. Nonetheless they immediately assisted Hector and Hosea in restraining Raquel.

"She's mine," said the evil spirit from somewhere deep inside what was Raquel just a short time before. The slightly drunk, feminine 17-year-old was transformed into an incredibly strong, abusive being. And the more they talked about Jesus Christ and God the more abusive the talk became and the greater the struggle to be free.

This started at approximately 10 o'clock in the morning and lasted into the late afternoon. Finally, exhausted, Raquel went limp and fell to sleep on her bed around four o'clock. The men left to prepare for the church service, which started at approximately 6:30 that night, leaving Raquel in the hands of her mother and brothers.

Things were somewhat peaceful while Raquel slept. Calls went out to several family members who were Christians, brothers of Raquel's father who agree to come over that night and the family settled down for the Sunday evening church service. Upon awakening Raquel was herself and agreed to attend the service.

Everything seemed normal in the church service which ended at about nine o'clock. Raquel immediately got up and said she had to get home but when they arrived, she would not enter. She began changing again, somehow aware that the other two Christian uncles were inside waiting for her. Once again her brothers and several of the men wrestled her inside the kitchen, yet she refused to go inside her room.

Hector and his brother spoke with their uncles while Hector's sister-in-law remained in the kitchen with Raquel. In the midst of the conversation they were startled to hear the sister-in-law screaming that Raquel had a knife and was trying to kill herself. They rushed in and found Raquel and the knife and wrestled it away from her. They then forced her into the bedroom on the bed where once again each of the brothers and now both of the uncles forcibly held her down. The pastor and several more men showed up shortly thereafter.

What followed was hour after hour of talking, praying, singing, fighting and wrestling. I will have more details soon from the actual participants. Suffice it to say that it was draining and extremely difficult for all involved. At this point they had no idea what they were dealing with except that it was evil and it wasn't Raquel.

Finally, at around 2:30 in the morning Monday morning Raquel was collapsed, exhausted and sleeping peacefully. In just 30 minutes Hector would have to leave with his sick brother and his wife to come pick Teresita and I up for the two plus hour drive to Guatemala City.
