MONDAY
Without sleep Hector set out on his trip to the city. Plans had changed and his mother and sister, who had planned to
accompany the sick brother, Eddie, were not present. Hector's mind was working overtime thinking, praying and wondering what
could possibly be happening.
Once he picked us up there was very little talk as I for one was very sleepy. I had only gotten six hours sleep (Hector
had not slept, little did I know) and slept somewhat on the way into the airport. We said goodbye at the airport and Teresita
spoke to Eddie about God's will, we wish them well and we were off to California. While it wasn't a vacation, compared to
Hector's week mine would be simple.
After what seemed like forever in the city Hector and his passengers made their way back to Panajachel, uncertain as to
what they would find. But soon it would all happen all over again. This evenings events will be told through the eyes of
José Carmen, who was called around 7 p.m. by the pastor, already at the house and having difficulty.
José Carmen is married to the pastor's daughter and is a Deacon in the church. I've known him for four years and he is
a good Christian man who loves the Lord. He has worked for me for over a year and I trust his word.
When José Carmen arrived to the house he could hear the activity coming from the room, Raquel's room. As he entered he
saw men and Raquel's mother holding down her arms and legs. He saw a great struggle taking place and immediately went in
to assist. Taking hold of her arm he noticed how hot her skin was. As he began praying out loud he could feel the incredible
strength she manifested. As he admonished the evil spirit it looked directly at him
"She's mine," said the evil spirit, with a voice that wasn't Raquel's.
"In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, leave her!" Commanded José Carmen.
Obscenities and insults followed, along with several attempts to spit in José Carmen's face. He was careful to stay out
of her range. But the more he prayed or spoke to the evil spirit, the more it seemed to direct itself towards him. Indiscriminate
bouts of laughing followed by screaming foul things at the group would last for a while and then she would collapse, appearing
exhausted.
At one point she didn't move and the group simply praised God and gave thanks. At this time someone asked if she was
okay because she wasn't moving. José Carmen bent over her to touch her neck to get a pulse and was shocked to find that her
skin, burning hot just minutes before was now ice cold. Her eyes were rolled back into her head so that only the whites were
showing. It was a very eerie sight.
After determining that she was breathing and had a pulse, the men began singing something to the effect of "There
is power in the name of the Lord". Immediately she again began thrashing, telling them to shut up. But now it was the
evil spirit with the masculine gravelly voice.
"She's married to me," said the evil spirit.
"She belongs to Jesus Christ's," replied José Carmen, trying to be strong.
"She gave her life to me and I gave her whatever she wanted," snapped back to voice, eyes rolling back into
the head.
This continued until around 9:30 when the door opened and three men entered. José Carmen immediately recognized one of
the men as a renowned pastor from one of the local Assemblies of God churches. His reputation was that he had been involved
in healings and dealing with evil spirits. He was well known in the community and in fact, once in the past José Carmen had
used him when there was a problem with one of his relatives. There was a deep feeling of relief inside of José Carmen who
was feeling some pain in his stomach and was losing his voice.
The pastor and two of the men from his church stood aside while José Carmen and several others withdrew so that they could
get closer to the girl. The pastor stepped in and looked at the girl for a few moments and then he and the other two withdrew
as well. José Carmen was amazed as he stepped back in to take over his position he had just vacated.
For about the next 15 minutes the pastor and one of the men appeared to be praying while the third was simply watching.
At one point Hector, a little perturbed by this lack of participation, asked out loud that everybody pray. Finally, after
continued observation by this man with no participation, Hector asked him if he would please stay outside and wait. The men
reluctantly left. Several minutes later the pastor and his friend left and were heard from no more.
This process continued into the early morning hours once again. There would be praying and challenging the evil spirit
followed by yelling and cursing and spitting by the evil spirit. More wrestling and holding followed by exhaustion and collapse
by Racquel. A short period of time would pass where Raquel would wake up, crying and asking that it all stop and immediately
the evil spirit would take over, her countenance would change and the process would start all over again.
Finally, after 2 a.m. Racquel fell into a deep sleep and the day ended. José Carmen, with the ever-increasing pain in
his stomach and no voice praised the Lord for what had happened though he was unsure exactly what I was. And so the day ended.
