Return to Raquel's story Click Here
Her brother is on the other end and wants to know where she is. She says she doesn't know but that she is coming home. She
is asked if she has money for the taxi and she says no, but that she'll borrow some. Hector takes the phone and angrily asks
where she is, telling her that he'll come pick her up. She refuses to disclose where she's at and the phone goes dead.
She tells the witches that she has to go home and they give her money for taxi fare. Then they go get brand-new clothes
for her that they just "happened" to have. She then sets out for home wearing the witches clothes and they gave
her.
Once at home she is immediately confronted by three angry brothers who at once want to beat the crap out of her and yet
rejoice that she is home. They take turns protecting her from the other two and then wanting to beat her. The voice speaks
to her and tells her to look at this family, look how much they don't love you. The voice says only the voice loves her.
And then her mother comes home and immediately starts crying. Her mother says that she wishes Raquel had died when she was
just a little girl (she had an illness that almost killed her). Now everyone is crying and yelling and the voice is speaking
in Raquel's head. She retreats into the kitchen and grabs a knife.
Now the anger turns to confusion and concern and they grab the knife from her and things calm down a bit. They begin
praying as Rachel goes to her bed and lays down and sleeps.
At this point I want you to try to understand their thinking. The baby of the family, 17-year-old Raquel, the only girl
has left in the night and not returned home. When she finally comes home she is drunk and is wearing new clothes. Here in
Guatemala in the villages, the women tend to have just two skirts and two or three blouses. It is very apparent that she's
wearing clothes that don't belong to her. Her brothers, including Hector have all had times when there behavior was very
bad. Indeed, discos\bars, drinking, drugs and women were a major part of Hector's life before he accepted Christ. And this
behavior that their sister\daughter is exhibiting is exactly what they used to be involved in. But it's far different for
the women than it is for the men. Men can change and be salvaged in this society but women are considered used.
Raquel sleeps and things settle down for the rest of the day. But some things have been said that don't make sense and
there is much discussion and prayer in the household as they prepare for the church service which is held on Sunday evenings
at 7 p.m.
Back at my house overlooking Santa Catarina and, interestingly enough the very house that the witches live in where Raquel
spent the night, Teresita and I are preparing for our trip back to the United States. Hector will be by Monday morning at
3:30 a.m. to take us to the airport and his brother Eddie to the hospital for an emergency transfusion which we hope will
save his life. We retire early at about 9 p.m., just as things are starting to get very interesting back at the church.
Sitting in the church service Raquel can't sit still. She wants help but she doesn't know where to turn. In the church
as the pastor speaks the voice is rebutting what he says, even threatening her if she tries to turn her back on him. When
the pastor gives the invitation for people to come forward who need help she immediately rises and goes to the front. But
as she tries to speak to the pastor she finds she cannot open her mouth. This inability for Raquel to speak will also be
apparent over the next few days to those attending the "exorcism"\deliverance. She immediately runs out of the
church, followed by her brothers.
The brothers are talking to her as they walk down the street towards the house. Inside the house are two brothers of
Raquel's father who are evangelical Christians from another village. Somehow she knows they're in the house and she doesn't
want to enter. Her mother comes and joins the group and together they convince her to go inside. There is some talking and
questioning for a short time.
In the church service earlier Hector recalls a dream he had just a week before these events were taking place. In the
dream he got up in the night and walked to the River where he came upon a house. The house was dirty and in ill repair; it
seemed as though it had been burned in the past. As he stood looking at the house a woman appeared, a black woman who immediately
began to talk to Hector.
"Tell Raquel the money she has is dirty." And then the dream ended.
As Hector thought about this in the church service he purposed to ask her about the dream when they arrived home from
church and so he went to her.
"Raquel, I had a dream where a woman told me to tell you the money you have is dirty," said Hector out of the
blue. "What does that mean?"
Raquel remembers this question. She remembers this question vividly because it was at this point the evil spirit physically
took possession of her body. She felt something cold that started at her fingernails, and then seemingly entering under her
fingernails into her hands and arms and then her whole body. She remembers nothing else until she woke the next day.
RAQUEL'S MOTHER AND FATHER
At this point Raquel's mother and father continue the story. Once Hector asked that question everything immediately changed.
Raquel's eyes rolled far back into her head and she spoke slowly and deliberately. But it was not Raquel speaking. The
voice was husky, gravelly and spoke in a deep baritone. It was a man's voice.
"You can't have her she's mine!" The voice said from Raquel's mouth.
In the room at this point were five men (two brothers, her father and two uncles) and her mother. All were in shock and
disbelief at the voice coming from Raquel. But there was no time to ponder what was happening. Raquel wanted to leave the
house.
Hector, immediately sensing something deeply wrong and being led by the Holy Spirit began quoting scripture verses while
at the same time helping to subdue Raquel. Normally he could handle his sister but not tonight. Hosea, a strong and chiseled
young man had the other arm but could not manage to hold it. In jumped the other three and they were able to get her to the
bed and somewhat hold her down. Hector immediately told his mother to call the pastor, just down the street at the church
where the service had ended only 30 minutes before.
Each of the men tell the same story. Raquel was saying crazy things in a voice that wasn't her own with the strength
of many men. The men prayed and admonished the spirit in the name of Jesus Christ. They prayed for deliverance, they prayed
for help; they prayed.
Finally after what seemed like an eternity the pastor and several more men came. People had now gathered outside the
house. As I explained earlier there is no privacy with everybody's "hut" built immediately next to the next persons.
Scores of people were outside the room listening and trying to peer inside the window. The pastor and several of the men
including Hector had had a similar experience several years ago with another teenager. And so they prayed and sang and struggled
and wrestled with this evil that now possessed Raquel.
More coming....
